TAPESTRIES OF ZHYTOMYR POLISSIA
The scientist from Zhytomyr regional ethnography museum N. Kobylinska
speaks about tapestries of South Zhytomyr region, where the folk art has saved its
primitive and archaic character. Tapestry making achieved its
flourishing in XVII - at the beginning of XIX centuries and existed
only in free from serfdom "noble" villages of Korosten, Ovrutsk,
Malyn and Lugynsk regions. Among the techniques the most ancient
and widely used was so called technique "in lowering". The other
method is weaving "in store". The most widely used colors are red,
green, white, yellow, black, blue. The red color was a solemn color
and a color of life among a great number of peoples. The Slavs gave
it also the meaning of protection. The green color is the symbol of
spring, the blue - of Gods, the yellow and white gained the meaning
of holiness and leadership.
Tapestry from Podil brings cipher system of Drevliane pagan world outlook, whose descendants are Polishchuks (Drevliane, Polishchuks - are ancient inhabitants of definite Ukrainian regions). Popular geometry, plant, zoomorphism motives are connected with the ancient symbolism of signs. The variety of design, its meaning go deep into spiritual objective reality of Ukrainian people.
